Thus ends the octet on Yama composed by Savithri which occurs in the first chapter of Brahma Vaivartha  Maha Purana.


The above verses in praise of Lord Yama - the god of death - are from Devi Bhagavatam (9-31). Savitri asked many questions about the paths taken by jivas (souls) after death and Yama answers them in detail. In the course of his reply Yama described the glory of Devi. Savitri was very much pleased with the answers given by the god of death and in these verses praised him in gratitude. The last verse says that those who recite the verses daily in the morning will be free from sins and also from fear of death.
